The seizure of horseshoe crabs has brought the focus back on wildlife poaching in general and smuggling of the protected aquatic animals in particular.
Sunil Biswas, a resident of Bardhaman district in West Bengal, was caught red-handed by forest officials on 2nd January 2020 in Baripada, Thursday while selling the endangered horseshoe crabs species in the weekly market. Biswas was selling the protected animal along with items like herbal oil and medicinal herbs. He has been arrested under Schedule-IV of Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. The seized turtles are of the Carcinoscorpius rotundicauda species. These have great demand in the black market for traditional medicine and other purposes(ABC Community survey)
